Wexford Ladies Gaelic Football: A History of Passion and Growth

Since its inception on May 27th, 1979, Wexford Ladies Gaelic Football has been a cornerstone of the sport for women and girls across County Wexford. From humble beginnings, the organization has blossomed, now boasting over 5,000 members across 37 clubs, a testament to its dedication to fostering a love for Gaelic football.

Early Years and Development:

The early years were marked by a determined effort to establish a strong foundation for women's Gaelic football in the county. Dedicated volunteers worked tirelessly to organize competitions, develop coaching structures, and promote the sport at all levels. This grassroots effort laid the groundwork for the success that would follow.

A Tradition of Success:

Wexford Ladies Football has a proud tradition of achievement on the field:

  • All-Ireland Senior Ladies' Football Championship Finalists: Reaching the pinnacle of the sport, Wexford contested All-Ireland Senior finals in 1983, 1986, and 1989, showcasing the county's talent on the national stage.
  • All-Ireland Junior Champions: In 2014, Wexford claimed the All-Ireland Junior title, a victory that highlighted the strength and depth of the game in the county.
  • Underage Triumphs: Wexford has a rich history of success at underage levels, with multiple All-Ireland titles in Under-18, Under-16, and Under-14 competitions. These victories underscore the organization's commitment to nurturing young talent and building for the future.

More Than Just Games:

Wexford Ladies Football is more than just matches and trophies. It's about community, camaraderie, and empowering women through sport. The organization provides opportunities for women of all ages and abilities to participate in Gaelic football, promoting physical and mental well-being, and fostering lifelong friendships.

Looking Ahead:

With over 5,000 members and 37 clubs, Wexford Ladies Football is in a strong position to continue its growth and success. The organization remains committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment for all players, ensuring that Gaelic football continues to thrive in County Wexford for generations to come.

Key to Continued Success:

Wexford Ladies Football's success can be attributed to several factors:

  • Dedicated Volunteers: The tireless efforts of volunteers who dedicate their time to coaching, administration, and promoting the sport have been instrumental in its growth.
  • Passionate Players: The commitment and enthusiasm of the players, from underage to senior level, drive the organization forward.
  • Strong Community Support: The support of local communities and sponsors has been crucial in providing resources and encouragement.

Wexford Ladies Football is a shining example of the power of sport to bring people together and empower individuals. Its history is a testament to the dedication, passion, and commitment of everyone involved. As the organization looks to the future, it can do so with confidence, knowing that it has built a strong foundation for continued success.
